First Sock

Great colors! You won't believe how comfy handmade socks are. Now, here's hoping you can avoid second sock syndrome!

I love the colors. What size needles are you using? I attempted my first sock while traveling two weeks ago (MOTHERFUCKING SOCKS ON A PLANE!) and gave up. I flew to California and wasn't even a quarter of the way done when we flew over the Grand Canyon, so I ripped it out and it's becoming an Ella shawl (knitty). I think they were size 1s. I did see an episode of Knitty Gritty where the guest knit socks from a bulkier yarn and size 4s. I am going to give those a try before I completely throw in the towel.

BTW, I think the cure to second sock syndrome is to knit socks in similiar but not the same colorways. That way, you can mix and match and don't have to worry about the "second sock."

Gina - The booties I made for the girls were both worsted weight on size 7's. Anne Norling has a nice apttern for worsted weight socks.

I love knitted socks, but haven't yet gained the courage to venture into knitting my own. I find knitting with dpns to be a bit awkward. I suppose I'd get used to them after knitting a pair of socks, though. I can't wait to see how yours look when finished! The colors are knitting up quite nicely.

WooHoo! Another sock knitter! ;)

I find socks to be the perfect knit for me because they go fast enough that there's no time to get bored with any one section of the sock.

G, Interweave knits has a great pattern for cabled worsted weight ankle socks knit on size 5's. I made several pairs of them for Christmas. I believe they are called Buffalo Girl Socks because the pattern actually calls for Buffalo Gold yarn. Which I did not use, because at $60 a skein...well, ouch.

I have not attempted socks yet, but I just got some new books and there is a sweet pair of baby socks I may try. (I figure baby socks will knit up quicker)

I think those look great so far. Wonderful colors! :)

Ever since you sent me that awesome skein (come to think of it Elisa sent me sock yarn too, which is so nice and soft) I have been day dreaming about socks. However, I would really like to make them with the toe up magic loop,...This maybe the inspiration I have been needing for a while.

Peeps, I cast on a toe-up sock just tonight. It's worsted weight, on size 5s. I looked at the Knitty Gritty "Twinkle Toes" episode to help me with the cast on, and I love how fast it is going. I think maybe my plan will be to start with worsted weight yarn and work down to the sock yarn.

Thanks for the Buffalo GIrl sock info, E. Will check it out. There's an article about toe-up socks in this months Interweave Knits, which I may consult if I can't work my way through Vickie Howell. I have to say, she used to irritate me, but now I really like her. I like the variety of guests they have on the show this year. Lots of men and bloggers.

Oh, and only 1,198 people ahead of me on ravelry. LOL!

Gina, these are size 3 needles. I was a bit leery because I have such limited knitting time and tiny needles take so long. This has gone pretty fast so far thank goodness!
Can't wait to see your sock :)
